Occupational health check-ups

As with everything in life, health is a person’s fundamental asset. And, in the workplace, we can say that in order to carry out a job, it is essential that the worker’s state of health is adequate.

Every worker is entitled to an annual medical examination at their employer’s expense. Therefore, it is the employer’s obligation to provide the worker with the medical examination, and it is the worker’s right, except in certain cases where the worker is obliged to undergo it. In this regard, Article 22 of Law 31/1995 of 8 November on the Prevention of Occupational Risks states:

The Travessera Medical Centre has its own Occupational Risk Prevention Service and occupational health physician to carry out occupational health examinations and issue a ‘medical fitness’ certificate.

It is one of the few services we offer by appointment; the reason is that these are lengthy check-ups and we don’t want to keep you waiting. For this reason, we operate a timetable as follows:

Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00 without interruption.

The medical certificate is issued on the same day if the examination is carried out in the morning, or the next day if it is carried out in the afternoon.

The cost of the examination includes:

  • Complete occupational health examination
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Health Surveillance Contract
What are occupational health medicals?

Occupational health examinations are those carried out on employees of a company and are intended to ensure that the employee’s state of health will not adversely affect the performance of their profession, or that their work will not have negative effects on their health.

Will any medical examination I have had suffice?

The occupational health medical examination consists of a joint assessment by the examining doctor and the occupational health specialist. Therefore, not just any medical examination will suffice.

The parameters used for the protocol are:

  1. Medical history, weight and height
  2. Cardiac (ECG), ENT, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, neurological and dermatological examination
  3. Blood pressure, heart rate, vision, audiometry, spirometry
  4. Analytics: indicators such as full blood count, cholesterol, biochemistry, glucose, creatinine, uric acid and urine, among others.
  5. Additional tests: according to the hazards inherent to the specific workplace.
In the case of employees:

In accordance with Article 22 of Law 31/1995: ‘The employer shall ensure that employees under their service undergo periodic health surveillance in relation to the risks inherent in the work.’ Thus, companies will be responsible for arranging a contract with an Occupational Risk Prevention Service to carry out occupational health examinations for their employees at the intervals specified by law according to their job. Companies with contracted staff cannot require their employees to pay for health surveillance; it is a mandatory service provided by the company itself.

For the self-employed:

In sectors such as construction or metallurgy, you may find that you are required to have a MEDICAL FITNESS CERTIFICATE for the work for which you are contracted. It will be useful for jobs such as subcontractor on a building site, maintenance work in industries, and generally for jobs considered to involve special risks (Annex I of the Prevention Act 39/1995). If you are a self-employed professional, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with health surveillance.
